legacies and Faith

Each one of us has a legacy passed down to us from our parents. The legacy I am referring to includes beliefs, models of behavior, and a moral code. Some legacies are better than others but all are flawed. As human beings we look to our Faith and our legacies in order to figure out how to be the mother, wife, father, husband, friend, (insert any other role here). Our legacies have a powerful effect on us.
~God has a way of stripping away falsehoods in our legacies. There are times when He shows Light on the falsehoods and we look back on our behavior and are horrified about how we have lived our lives. There are also times when we allow that horror to in prison us in guilt.
~I think this is where Hope and Forgiveness need to enter. Poet Maya Angelou's comment on past behaviors states:
"You did what you knew how to do, and when you knew better, you did better."
Forgiveness is key to moving on and healing from past mistakes. Whatever you have done in the past based on ignorance, you did what you knew how to do. You are responsible for it. But from here on out, you must make the choice to learn from your mistakes and do better.

Depression and psychosis

Here is a copy of an email I sent to a friend.
Hey hon,

Do you remember our conversation about Andrea Yates while at the Children's Museum? Well I don't remember my response to your question or even the exact question you asked but I have been praying and thinking off and on about depression that leads to psychosis. I have wanted to share with you some thoughts on it but keep forgetting. I am watching Oprah right now and there is a father on there that killed his twin girls. A couple 'things' have come to me since our conversation. Being apart of the law like Jon is, we have already been subjected to scrutiny more so than 'normal' citizens. Also we have been witness to something we really knew to be true for a long time. The media absolutely has moments when it totally misses the truth of a story. I think the media did not necessarily report all truths of the Andrea Yates story. Media likes the attention that sensational information brings. Another thing I have been made aware of the deepness some people's depression goes. I know after I had Morgan, I quickly went to place that was so uncharacteristic of me. No, I didn't think of killing any of my family but I know there are worse and much more deeper depressions than I or most the population goes through. These parents who are so deep into depression develop into a world of rules and goals that don't make sense to us. They are in a state of constant suffering and HOPELESSNESS. Our society is not conducive to anyone having the minimalist mental breakdown...let a lone thoughts about harming your family. But the Biblical truth is that God ALWAYS give you a way out of temptation. Each one of us, every day or at least every other day, don't take the 'out' that God gives us. We completely make the choice to commit the sin or give in to the temptation. I wonder if the psychosis of the deep dark depression these parents were in, did not make their decision to kill their children just like any other decision we all face everyday...any other temptation. These parents are so completely gone that temptation is much easier to get in and take over. Satan is so cheap. he is so cheap in his attack on us. He knows us and knows where we are weak and vulnerable. And he is constantly petitioning God to shift us like wheat. The lesson for us to learn is not to judge those parents but love them. The judgment is with God. Learn the lesson that if any of us ever get that low, and yes have thoughts that are down right horrid tell others at all costs. I would hate to live in the reality these parents live in now but I know that given the same circumstance and level of depression, I could be one of those people. I praise God I have never been there but I am not naive enough to think I am too good to at same point be there.
Blessings
Kim
